You can easily get there via public transport by taking the train to Lara from either Geelong or Melbourne if you do not have access to a vehicle. I would advise allowing as much time as possible if you hope to walk all of the trails and to be able to explore the different environments and the many species of birds.

Taxi v SMRT – The SMRT is the excellent, clean, safe, reliable, cheap transport system of Singapore. The birding is not exceptional, but you can easily see some of Singapore’s and South-east Asia’s more common species and it does throw up the occasional jewel. Of course you don’t really care if you are a duck! Herdsman Lake is easily reached by public transport form the city centre and it is best to allow about 4 hours to do a complete lap for birding. We saw over 50 species of birds during the afternoon and despite all the warnings we did not see any snakes!

We were able to add Wood Sandpiper, Galah, Pink-eared Duck, Sharp-tailed Sandpiper, Red-kneed Dotterel, Black Swans, Spinifex Pigeon and Variegated Fairywren to our year list at the Poo Ponds and there were numerous other waterbirds that we had already seen at the Broome Poo Ponds on New Year’s Day. I would do a lap of the lake and take in all of the different species of birds that called the city home. It remains a good location for observing birds close to the city and easily accessible by public transport. Visiting Albert Park in winter recently, all wrapped up in layers of clothing – ethically sourced down is good!

Ibirapuera Park is a city park with lakes, lawns and wooded areas.

If you happen to find yourself in Melbourne then there are also plenty of places to go birding in the city itself or not far by public transport. Herdsman Lake is easily accessible by public transport, but when we have visited by vehicle we have gone further afield to Yanchep National Park and the Perth Hills. Ducks of Herdsman Lake.
