Ducks and geese certainly make up the bulk of the observations. I just got my report off to PASP, so I really don’t know a whole lot about my bird yet, but I do know that it is bird #055, and that its new “Bird Bling” was added in either Bolivia, Ecuador or Peru! as well in my photographs.

In Costa Rica, we did our part and were elated to finish with more than 640 species. Keel-billed Toucan , one of three toucan species seen during our day of birding. Overhead, we got our first species in the form of a calling Black-bellied Whistling-Duck. Pre-dawn in the Lowlands.

Knowing that there are reserves with long lists of 600 or more species, I set my threshold at more than 600 birds… and found only a few such hotspots. In early November 2020, there were 15 countries with more than 1000 species eBirded so far. Other than that, there are barely a few hotspots with over 500 species.

Hunting sandhill cranes in Kentucky is a bad idea from a public relations standpoint, considering the growing cadre of birders and nature enthusiasts for whom cranes are a touchstone species. Initiating a hunting season on a large, charismatic species like a crane is no way to resuscitate hunting.

My best bird of the year is based on the sighting rather than the species. This ABA Code 4 bird was found hanging out with some Wood Ducks in Missoula, conveniently enough, by Radd Icenoggle. Only trouble is, which of the seven species I saw this year do I pick? Rock Warbler by Clare Morton. Redgannet picked a real stunner.

Like Kapiti the island is an offshore refuge for many species extinct on the mainland, with a lot of the work being done by the voluntary Supporters of Tiritiri Matangi. One species I really hoped to find on the trip was the Kokako. Saddleback ( Philesturnus carunculatus ) on the beach. A week spent on Kapiti only got us 3 of them!

Birders know that the light’s not always perfect or even particularly good when you’re trying to tell one species from another. Felonious Jive really likes a ravishing returning rarity – a Falcated Duck. Falcated Duck by Felonious Jive Duncan Wright had some pretty good birds to choose from for his Best Bird of the Year. This bird represented only the second documented record of this species in Florida. Sound good?
