After lunch we headed to Fickland Pan, a small farmstead overlooking a pool of water filled with ducks. The pan itself was great too, with my lifer White-backed Duck (hell, this day was full of lifers) and Maccoa Ducks along with a lot of coots and some Little Grebes. Wouldn’t fancy my chances by myself. But we did.

There was a lot of hunting for Bald Eagles—it is traditionally a game species. Yes, they have been an endangered species for as long as most of us can recall, but remember, they were traditionally a hunted species. There was a bounty on them in Alaska from 1917 until 1952—up to $2 a head!

A curious Laysan Duck takes a stroll at Midway Atoll. Laysan Ducks don’t seem to be as tied to water as other ducks, which makes sense considering the limited habitat available. Although Laysan Duck is a Hawaiian bird, most birders have never heard of it. That would have been awful. home at Midway Atoll.

This critically endangered species was presumed extinct for over 100 years, and was not discovered again until pelagic trips (run by the same people as mine) began chumming to attract other seabirds. Critically, NWRs preserve habitat and wildlife, often for endangered species. For example, even if nobody visited Aransas NWR in Texas, it would still provide virtually all of the wintering habitat for the endangered Whooping Crane. The Orange-fronted Parakeet is a critically endangered species that I came agonisingly close to seeing but didn’t. So I was particularly pleased when one of the last birds I saw was a Spot-billed Duck, a local bird and lifer. A new duck! See, according to eBird, that isn’t a species. How awesome.

Mt Bruce, since you ask, is the Department of Conservation’s premier endangered bird breeding centre. The centre now encompasses native bush into which some of these endangered species have been released. (It Long-finned Eels swam in the rivers, and in their pens the breeding Blue Ducks where whistling away.
