I think it’s time to hunt Sandhill Cranes. We’ve always hunted Bald Eagles. There was a lot of hunting for Bald Eagles—it is traditionally a game species.

I’m sure most of you know that the Peregrine Falcon became an endangered species because of the use of organochlorine pesticides, especially DDT, during the 1950′s, 60′s, and 70′s. They were officially listed as Endangered in 1970 in the U.S. Peregrine Falcon at Delevan National Wildlife Refuge.

One thing you must do is hire a local guide, as while you can hunt for yourself you’ll see a hell of a lot more with one. After lunch we headed to Fickland Pan, a small farmstead overlooking a pool of water filled with ducks. Once you’re in town there is a nice little hotel pub in town and a small range of places to eat.

Not only were they a common bird, they were a common bird nearshore; indigenous peoples hunted them up and down the coast. A curious Laysan Duck takes a stroll at Midway Atoll. Laysan Ducks don’t seem to be as tied to water as other ducks, which makes sense considering the limited habitat available.
