October is a good month to see owls in Shanghai, where these birds are rare in most other months. Two species can be seen quite regularly – Northern Boobook and Oriental Scops Owl. In contrast, Oriental Scops Owls seem to often migrate in slightly larger groups of maybe 10 or so.

The end of September and early October is also the best time to see Oriental Scops Owls in Shanghai – though they can be hard to spot, being very good at hiding.

According to the HBW, captive wild-caught juveniles from the Xishuangbanna Tropical Botanical Garden in China tend to prefer black and red fruits over yellow, green or blue fruits. The HBW entry on the Collared Scops Owl is disappointingly short, given that this is an extremely cute and attractive bird and that the entry is attributed to 9 (!)

Collared Scops Owl – A Cat Head Eagle. For a German living in China, bird names have some additional complexities. The Chinese name is Huitouwu, or “Grey-headed Bunting” – point for China, in my opinion. Helpful when talking to Chinese birders. Fairy Pitta: the 8-color bird.

Despite not being rare in China, this was the first time for me to see Carrion Crow at Nanhui. As mentioned in a previous post, October is the best month to see owls here at Nanhui. The Japanese Scops Owl is the rarest of the three I saw this October. After a few days, they left again.

While these birds are very much liked by Chinese birders, the species could unfortunately not be named the National Bird of China as the Latin species name of the bird is Grus Japonicus. Apart from the crane, some Long-eared Owls were the highlight of this short trip for me. it would not be the national bird of the USA either.

So, I asked around and was told that Qinghai is the place to go to for birds in China in August. A Little Owl blocked the road and asked for our Covid health certificates. Early August is a bit of a dead time for birding in Shanghai unless you like your birds as little white spots at the far end of a telescope.
