I feel that like most bird families (with the obvious exception of pheasants), buntings are somewhat underrated. The Little Bunting – as the name suggests – is probably the cutest of the family. I am particularly fond of Tristam`s Bunting – maybe the smartest-looking of the family. In other words, they are my kind of birds.

China is not that well-known for its hornbills, but in Yunnan province, on the border to Myanmar, some species can be found. Visiting the family. The bird in the photo is a male, as indicated by the yellow rather than blue throat sack – and by the fact that it is outside of the hole at breeding time (the female is in the hole).

According to the HBW, captive wild-caught juveniles from the Xishuangbanna Tropical Botanical Garden in China tend to prefer black and red fruits over yellow, green or blue fruits. Blue-throated Barbet s apparently also have color preferences related to their food. Indeed, Wikipedia states that the collared scops owl is a small owl.

I saw two Pitta species at Hongbenghe, both among the slightly less glamourous among the pitta family: The Blue-naped Pitta … … and the closely related Rusty-naped Pitta. While it is listed as Least Concern, it is rare in China – the range map in the HBW barely touches Chinese territory.

Their flushing habits can be useful, with Common Snipe emitting a “dry, rasping call” (Clive Viney, Birds of Hong Kong and South China) as it rises for its zig-zaggy flight. Painted Snipe have their own family, separate from the true snipes. The Pintail Snipe only zig-zags briefly and gives a sound more akin to a quack.

China is developing very fast, and Shanghai is developing even faster. The Black-crowned Night Heron is a member of the heron family. In the photos, you can see sometimes male and female (these two can look quite different), for others, baby and adult birds. This sometimes makes it difficult for wild animals to survive.
