These photos were actually taken right from my hotel room. House-hunting, apparently. Cattle Egret. Doing what cattle egrets do: communicating with cattle, even though these tend to be somewhat dull conversation partners. Though with just two birds and no alcohol in sight, this may not be the right term.

Uganda’s Billion Dollar Bird: The Shoebill

That honor goes to the Gray-crowned Crane , a very sexy species in its own right. Of course, we did, soaking in that slate blue beauty long enough to observe a successful hunt and more of its rangy, awkward flight. Unfortunately, the world cares little for weavers, no matter how rare or range-restricted. The mighty Shoebill.

Birding a flooded highway

Unfortunately we have only ever seen dead Barn Owls in the Broome area and one day it would be nice to see a bird hunting over the land. All the tracks onto the station property were underwater and all of the Brahman Cattle have moved to the highest ground that they can find. Black-winged Stilt holding their ground!

The Crocodile Safari (Botswana)

A few paddle strokes down the river and on the right bank there were four Impala antelopes ( Aepyceros melampus ). nubicoides ) using them as a high viewpoint to hunt dragonflies. The gentleman living on a farm by the Ngotwane Dam said ‘A croc took my dog, right there!’. Cattle Egret 16. How can I not be? Grey Heron 4.

What to Do at High Island When the Winds are South

It stops those thousands of migrating birds flying across the Gulf of Mexico and directs them right onto the trees, fields, sanctuaries, beaches along the Bolivar Peninsula, where they hopefully find food and fresh water. I imagined walking right up to them. High Island in April requires Weather, so I was told. American Avocets.
