As we came through the open fields towards the coast there were numerous Cattle Egrets among the cattle and Straw-necked Ibis. It is home to weedy sea dragons and a wide variety of fish and is obviously popular regardless of the weather. It is the perfect spot to have a picnic and stroll and experience a wide variety of birds.

Heading south on a good surfaced road, we made slow progress through the herds of cattle, donkeys and goats that thronged the highway, until we finally reached the land of the Konso.

Then, we became birders again, noting Common Mynas and Eastern Cattle Egrets on the terraced lawns, Yellow-footed Pigeons, European-collared and Red-collared Doves in the trees bordering the garden squares. Well, the Dusky Eagle-Owl was big too, but for some reason, the Fish-Owl seemed huge. It was a big owl. And this is what we saw.

During this time, the fish trapped in the shrinking pools of water attract hordes of herons, egrets, storks, and other wetland species. The incredible lighting at dawn in the Pantanal is an experience in of itself. I must mention one thing. Screamers are most closely related to waterfowl such as ducks and geese.

On a second visit I spotted a fishing boat going east along the channel followed by over a hundred gulls and terns, including over 40 Black Terns. This was the High Island Experience, I was told. At the end of the road, we found two Nelson’s Sparrows who quickly flew out to a tiny bit of land in the channel. It was amazing.
