They are not necessarily the biggest African animals, but represented those that were considered a real hunter’s worthy prey or “game” – the African Elephant, Cape Buffalo, Black Rhinoceros, Leopard and king of the jungle, the Lion (which of course doesn’t inhabit jungle but savanna!). In Asia they are even commonly kept as pets!

I daresay Fred wanted to do the hike more than we did but being kids before the digital age, we were always game for outdoor adventures. Both can be a challenge and require patient Zen birding in the right places. The Marbled might be slightly easier but I wouldn’t call it simple.

Lately it’s almost certainly my young son’s cry of “kitty-cat bird!&# Maybe I enjoy their song, a cascade of squeals, squeaks and warblers running reckless out of a willow grove or blackberry thickets. Where I grew up in Missouri, Catbirds were present, but not in the same density that I find here in North Carolina.

The ferry is a very nice powered catamaran, that moves right along at 18-20 knots, but in 3-4 meter seas, that will make for a pretty bumpy ride. Imported rats, Short-tailed Weasels, or Stoats as they are know as here, 0possums, and feral cats have caused the extinction of literally dozens of bird species here in New Zealand.

At this age, they are also able to make short flights, a highly desirable trait for game birds. You can see two adult males, one in the middle and one on the right side of the screen and an adult female running up to the foraging group from the cover at the edge of the yard. My guess is that these chicks are about five weeks old.

But I do think this issue of hunting sandhill cranes goes beyond the right to hunt. Wicked, right? Why not just shoot the biggest one? Not at all.
