Right, smack dad in the middle of Summer Lake Wildlife Refuge. Our 5th wheel and truck are parked in just about as close to the middle of this central Oregon refuge as possible. Not another person for miles, and a pair of friendly, well, almost, Great Horned Owls living in the tree right above us. Now that is a first.

The 9 th of February, This afternoon finds us in Bakersfield California, this time working on Plan C, as the trip took way longer crossing the mountains that I had figured. Mourning and Eurasian Collared Doves, House Finches and a couple of California Scrub Jays turned out to the bulk of what I could find. Now it is on to Oregon.

OK sure, it is only an hour drive before I reach Swainson’s paradise in the Central Valley of California… but where I live, any large brown Buteo has a higher probability of Red-tailed Hawkishness. The first time I spent any quality time with them was in Klamath Basin on the border of California and Oregon.

Tom Brown grew up in the high desert area of Central Oregon. La Paz, the capital city of Baja California Sur, the southern half of the Mexican Baja, has been a real joy, with both the desired weather, and a much expanded variety of bird species. Many times she would even buzz over look me right in the eye, and then go back to feeding.
