All eight hunters on the commission think it’s a good idea to shoot cranes in Kentucky. The public comment period on the Kentucky sandhill crane hunting proposal ends AUGUST 1 2011.

I think the main reason turkey/vehicle collisions are more noticeable this time of year are breeding hormones. Wild Turkeys were a species of concern in the 20th Century and several reintroduction programs were tried, including the release of domestic turkeys (that didn’t work so well). Turkey hunters…not so much.

What could motivate gunmen (I cannot call them hunters) in two states to deliberately kill North America’s tallest and most critically endangered bird?

Interestingly, the eagle featured in Panama’s coat of arms is not the Harpy Eagle, but a representation of an American eagle species, as the United States was the first country to recognize Panama’s independence. A Harpy Eagle. Like Woods, I can’t get over their talons.

There were two species there, even, of a type I had never heard of. You’ll find pardalotes over most of Australia, but only four species in all. One of those species, the Forty-spotted Pardalote , is found only in a small part of Tasmania. It was, recently, pardaoltes that got me thinking about this. What a treat!
