After a very good Wet Season with substantially more rain than normal over the first few months of 2017 the land was flooded and a huge variety of birds arrived in the Broome area to take advantage of the ideal conditions for breeding. Two birds on the right and one on the left-note the bills! Australian Painted Snipe nest.

Black-bellied Whistling-Ducks , Muscovy Ducks and Blue-winged Teals were around us, together with Green , Great and Little Blue Herons , Cattle and Great White Egrets , Black-crowned and Yellow-crowned Night-Herons , plus one locally rare Pinnated Bittern in the floating vegetation, as well as several dozen Neotropical Cormorants.

The Asian Koel is a cuckoo species and thus freed from the obligation to raise its own chicks (though the birds like to refer to themselves as brood parasites, which sounds a bit less obviously selfish). Lesser Whistling Ducks are “not threatened by hunting as they are not considered good to eat” ( Wikipedia ). Lucky ducks.

Egyptian Vultures raised is isolation used rocks to crack eggs presented to them. It may take just being at the right place at the right time. Interestingly some of these ponds are favored by these herons for foraging and have ducks that are fed by people. Further support for inherent behavior comes from experiments.

Which these days involves a frenzy to breed and raise a brood. My friend on the end of the line got right to the point: “What does a Kingfisher look like?” This is the 3rd year for these most northerly known breeding pair of loons. A Baird’s Sandpiper, our most common breeding shorebird.
