The ABA currently lumps the Mangrove Warbler and Golden Warbler with the Yellow Warbler (the IOC lumps Mangrove and Golden Warbler together but splits them from the Yellow Warbler that breeds in North America.) Chuk makes his quip about the Black-winged Yellow Bird; my friend Molly insists that everything is a duck, a pigeon, or an owl.

There was a lot of hunting for Bald Eagles—it is traditionally a game species. In my home state, Bald Eagles are breeding in 35 Ohio counties. The Bald Eagle has the potential to be the Holy Grail of game birds. We’ve always hunted Bald Eagles. Bald Eagles were nearly exterminated from the Lower 48 by the mid 1970’s.

When you review the system, it makes perfect sense: falcons are placed with hawks, nightjars are next to owls, and grebes are close to ducks, rather than separated from them by quail and grouse. A lone Whooper Swan on a grey January day in Norfolk As for the ducks – I’m now up to 15 species. The birds I saw were mixed in with a flock of Tufted Ducks, their European counterparts, for they are a similar size and have very similar habits and behaviour. Every year I look forward to the return of our summer breeding birds.

These birds (usually juveniles) are clearly linked to the growing breeding population in the region. Pallid Swifts were already back at their breeding sites, while the marshes provided a host of waders, including year-ticks such as Whimbrel, Curlew Sandpiper and Kentish Plover. These are Dunlins.

I got to see a beautiful female and owlet on a trip to a secret nest location near Howard Prairie Lake (human-made nest structures have enhanced local breeding for these huge owls whose nest success is boosted to 83% on artificial platforms vs. 66% at natural sites). They were big enough that when they flew you felt it!

You might find African Grey Parrot or Hartlaub’s Ducks drawn to the salty water of the baïs or Bare-cheeked Trogons and Blue Malkohas in the trees. Game viewing on foot, by 4×4 or by motorboat. Forest Elephants here graze inside the camp, other species to be seen include Bongo and Dwarf Crocodile.

Then you take into account that the tides will be completely different and it is a whole new game! Our next stop was the Poo Ponds , where there are very few ducks now we have had some rain. There were several Masked Lapwings and Black-winged Stilt that appeared to be breeding and also Black-fronted Dotterel. Four Dollarbirds.

Another 170 are in captivity, many of them breeding stock for reintroduction efforts. That’s what you do with other game, right? Most of the deer and duck hunters I know lament the loss of an old growth forest or flood-plain swamp as much as I do. Why not just shoot the biggest one? Likewise for the anglers.
