Before we headed off to the Southern Highlands we had a few days in Sydney with my sister and family and took advantage of exploring the bush in search of a bird or two. It is accurate in the estimated length of time it takes to do the walks and allows for you to stop and bird or rest and still reach your destination in the estimated time.

The weather in Karratha was very hot during our visit with daytime temperatures of 38c (100f) and the predominant birds in the township were Little Corella , Crested Pigeons and Silver Gulls. Karratha is a town built on industry and first impressions do not give you particularly high hopes for any good birding areas.

We have just returned from an incredible three weeks in Singapore, where unlike many others who visit the country we spent the whole time in nature parks, forests and gardens observing birds. The only shopping we did was to buy fresh fruit and some Asian snacks for while we were out all day hiking and birding.

Now up and running for over two years the Walkway Over The Hudson , which was once a bridge for trains to make their way over the Hudson River, is a pretty darn cool place to take a stroll. The first train crossed December 29, 1888. Northern Parula And what about the birds? mile long walkway.

The Royal Botanical Gardens are a huge area to explore and easily accessed by public transport. It was a race against time as the clouds raced across the sky and we sat on the conveniently located bench under the tree looking at this magnificent bird. How difficult is the place to reach in terms of planes, trains and automobiles? The species must be listed as a separate, full species by both of the most widely used ornithological bird lists, Sibley/Monroe and Clements. Only problem is, last time I checked there were no birds down there, let alone endemic ones.

On the first full day we had in Kutch, the largest and northernmost district of the state of Gujarat and where this year’s Global Bird Watching Conference was being held, the plan was to load the entire 300 person strong conference into 8 buses and travel over the desert on questionable roads to Chhari Lake. 300 people got off the bus.

Our bus ride to the train that would take us to the boat launch led through monoculture pineapple plantations being sprayed with pesticides that were not a pretty sight, but the view of the sun breaking through the clouds over the mountains (like in the picture above) was inspiring. Not only that, but we had a train ride to look forward to!

In both May and September there are a lot of trees without leaves and that can be quite advantageous if you are birding. Both Crimson Rosellas and Australian King Parrots stood out easily and many other birds did too! We then walked back to the train station and back to Katoomba to the walk back to our accommodation.

On our recent trip to Sydney we explored several areas that were easily reached by public transport & we discovered that there are some great walk trails that start near train stations. There are two good day walks that start at either Berowra or Mt Kuring-gai train stations and they can be done in either direction.

The Red Wattlebird, Spotted Doves and Common Mynas are the most common birds on this trail. As I continued towards Sandringham the beach widened and there were a few Superb Fairywrens nipping down from the saltbush to the promenade, but it was rather quiet for birds for a while. Having established that there are regular trains from the city of Melbourne to the Dandenong Ranges National Park with a weekend all day train ticket capped at $6 per person it made sense to head that way once again. It gave me a better opportunity to photograph these brightly coloured birds, which blend so well into the tall trees.

On the first trip in 2012 we used public transport to get there and the train conveniently gets you to Macarthur Square shopping centre and you can then get a bus that drops you right at the entrance to the park. On two of our trips to Sydney we have made a visit to the Australian Botanic Gardens at Mount Annan. Bell Miner.

Whilst we were planning our trip to Sydney we were hoping to fit some hiking and birding into our schedule and found a great website that would help us decide on some walks. I would recommend this if you are going to be out and about and most stations have regular trains all day including Sundays.

Herdsman Lake is easily reached by public transport form the city centre and it is best to allow about 4 hours to do a complete lap for birding. We saw over 50 species of birds during the afternoon and despite all the warnings we did not see any snakes! Of course you don’t really care if you are a duck!

With enough planning, you can enjoy a family-friendly, bird-rich vacation in the Panama Canal zone. Any dedicated birder visiting Panama City should first consider the Canopy Tower , one of the most important and beloved birding lodges in the Americas. Despite the golf course, this place host all manner of birds and mammals.
