No, you have not stumbled upon a WWI re-enactment, but a startled Ruffed Grouse , the state bird of Pennsylvania.

A breeding bird atlas is a special kind of book. For birders, it’s the extremely large book, shelved in a place where it can’t crush the field guides, used to research the history of a bird in their area. It included surveys of nocturnal and marsh birds, and a point count survey of songbirds.

The silver lining to these frigid winters is that birds are very active around my house, so I can enjoy cool cold-weather birds like Red-breasted Nuthatch from a warm perch. Corey enjoyed a long weekend in Narrowsburg, New York, along the Delaware River at the New York-Pennsylvania border. What was your best bird of the weekend?

Another month, another movement of the world’s birds from one point to the next. The best of them was a surprise Bobolink , which was a lifer for all three of Corey’s companions, and nice bird to see at anytime. It was easily Corey’s Best Bird of the Weekend. What was your best bird of the weekend?
