This little town of about 100 is located right next to what is considered the largest coral reef in all of Mexico [link] which is very well protected with in the boundaries of a Federal Marine Reserve. Quiet, peaceful, with no people to bother us, and of course, lots of birds. This is the large house.

When you travel north of La Paz, Mexico, staying on the Sea of Cortez side of the Baja, you will encounter the phosphate mines of San Juan De La Costa. The topography looks like it is right out of an early John Wayne movie. The first 35 miles of this trip are all on a very nice, two lane paved highway.

The country of Mexico as a whole, is host to 27 different species of doves, with the California Baja Sure home to six. There is of course the dry, cactus strewn desert areas, but with mountains up to 7000 feet, the habitat for our local birds is quite varied. The Baja, as it is known, is a truly diverse area.

This is not to say that there wasn’t a little birding time snuck in here and there. This wonderful piece of birding real estate can be found 8 miles east of Olympia, and an hour’s drive south of Seattle Washington, right along the I-5 corridor. Birds of prey took center stage out on the edge of the tidal flats.

The cactus are not the only things down here that are protected in this manner. The Elephant Cactus , puts out a white tubular flower that open from late March, until early, June, and are visited by nectar feeding bats at night and many birds during the day. Once the fruit is ripe, it becomes a primary source for many species.

The countrysides were incredible, the people were as hospitable as anywhere we went, and there are some fantastic birds. The last week found us start off in Hull, at the Spurn Bird Observatory. We had contacted the staff at the observatory, and with Jonnies help, arranged to stay right there in their newly built hostel type facility.

With shore side access limited to the northern end of the lake, that protection allows for a large population of water based birds. This is a bird that I have no memory of when I was a kid growing up here. In a 3 mile stretch of grassland, with sprinklers flowing, I counted well over 100 of these dark birds.

When you have birded a single area as much and for as long as I have birded Michoacán, it becomes progressively harder to find first-time species (“lifers”) there. I had seen several species turn up in new and unexpected places there, but none of them were birds that I had never seen before. Plus, dry tropical heat.

While there is not really a “birding” stop, there are plenty of opportunities for adding to this year’s growing species list. Puerto Escondido is a small protected harbor that caters to transient boats, both fishing as well as sailboats. A good portion though is agricultural and so the chance for a new group of birds is there.
