Pasir Ris Park-Singapore

Our first destination for observing birds in Singapore during our three week visit in March was Pasir Ris Park. It would be a great location to visit if you only had a few hours in Singapore and wanted to go beyond the airport to go bird watching. We were soon in Pasir Ris Town Park and observing a huge variety of birds.

White-throated Kingfishers in Singapore

Singapore is a great location for observing Kingfishers and there are several species to observe. Our first encounter with a White-throated Kingfisher in Singapore in March was at Gardens by the Bay , but it was a brief observation in poor light. We also observed the White-throated Kingfisher at the Singapore Botanic Gardens.

We had taken a trail down from the main path in Kent Park to a shelter to discover several bird species in the area including the White-crested Laughingthrush.

During our three week visit to Singapore in March we spent a good part of each day walking and birding. By 17th March we were not expecting to find too many more new birds to add to our list. The previous day in the Southern Ridges we had an odd encounter with what initially appeared to be a small bird flying through the trees.

Birding Hongbenghe, Yunnan (Part 1)

This is the home of the Rusty-naped Pitta , admittedly one of the less glamorous of the family, particularly the subspecies found in Yunnan, but still a nice sight and still a pitta. He published a number of books on birds of India and Burma, making me wonder how hard all these overseas civil servants really worked in their day jobs.
