Cartoon Birds

10,000 Birds

However, this is not what this post is about (though you could do worse than to search for the Larson cartoon “Stupid birds” online). Birding Ruili, Yunnan

10,000 Birds

I admit this is not quite on the level of fellow writers’ posts describing birding as an extreme sport. The bird has now started using its scientific name, Hemipus picatus , as it is substantially shorter. Birding Wawushan, Sichuan

10,000 Birds

In many ways, birding Wawushan is a nightmare for a solitary and crowd-hating birder like me. An unnamed bird guide called them “avoidless tourists”, which sums it up rather nicely. So, for example, there was ample warning of the danger of snow. Fortunately, safety seemed to be a priority at Wawushan.

Changing Bird Names (Again)

10,000 Birds

On April 16, 2021, the Diversity and Inclusion Committee of the American Ornithological Society (AOS), had a “ Community Congress on English Bird Names ” to discuss whether certain bird names should be changed and, if so, how quickly. One of the stated goals was to “understand diverse perspectives.”
