Ranging in color from off-white to dingy black, with pastel to gelatinous shades of yellow, orange, purple, and brown in-between, found in moist crevasses, decaying trees, rain-soaked pastures, mushrooms lack the beauty of butterflies and wildflowers cannot equal the action of bats, or flying fish, and certainly lack the spiritual zest of birds.

Last weekend, I went on a birding binge. I spent two full days where the birding was near constant, and, just to keep the binoculars from being neglected, topped it off with another half day of birding on our drive back from Cano Negro, Costa Rica. Like most of my birding weekends, this one began somewhere in the Central Valley.

So long as these birds keep arriving, I’ll keep doing what it takes to see them at great personal cost to myself. Back in November a small group of lucky shorebird surveyors found a Burrowing Owl sitting tight on a jetty on the south side of Masonboro Inlet in southeastern North Carolina. That’s my guarantee to you.

When they depart on their northward migration it is possible to go into Roebuck Bay in the late afternoon and watch them group up, call and then take off in beautiful V-formations. The return of the birds is a mystery. A small flock can easily be more birds than you think. During our counts we did have one bird that stood out.

The Cook Strait can be windy and choppy as all get out, and I’ve heard one horror story of a boat crossing in storm seas, spending five hours trying to thread the needle and get into the Marlborough Sounds, give up, and then head back to Wellington. Fortunately the crossing was lovely for me!

I have been working in the avian world for 25 years, but last summer I was out-birded by a 14-year-old girl. Actually, I was bested by an entire group of teenagers, all gathered – along with 36 adults – on Hog Island , Audubon’s famous camp off the coast of Maine.

It is interesting to note that the vast majority of birds flying by out there are going the other way. While in Mexico, up on the roof of a casa (where I was cooking something up) I saw a murmeration!

We had stopped at one of the massive over-looks near Roosevelt Lodge, when a small group of Pine Siskins flew all the way across the canyon, and landed in the tree above me.

It was given that name by Captain Cook, who thought it would be doubtful that he could sail his boat back out of there if he entered. So, it just might be that pisco – the beloved South American grape brandy contentiously claimed by both Peru and Chile – is the only spirit named after birds. Good birding and happy drinking!

The kakariki are an odd group of parakeets, particularly in terms of their distribution. A lot of the important recovery work on the Norfolk Parakeet, which was down to only 30 odd birds and around 4 females, was done prior to the split. Let’s back up a little bit and introduce the parakeets.

My trip wasn’t touristy but I was able to sneak off late one afternoon and early one morning to do a bit of woodland birding at a location called Campbell Park. As you first walk down the paths (or even park) the dominant species is not a bird but Eastern Grey Kangaroos, and lots of them. Speckled Warbler by David Cook (CC).

My reasoning was thus, from this station I could hike through some apparently excellent Sydney Heathland before dropping down into some forest and the excellent birding in the centre of the park. The birding started straight away, a pair of Yellow-faced Honeyeaters , some Variagated Fairy-wrens and some Rainbow Lorikeets.

The world of birding is filled with challenging groups well known to all, birds like gulls , Empidonax flycatchers or cisticolas that require attention to the tiniest details in order to assign an individual to a specific species (if it can be done at all). One such bird is the Collared Kingfisher ( Todiramphus chloris ).

It is these forests, and not the wetlands I have spoken of before , that hold the many endemics that make the Atherton Tableland such a rewarding place to go birding. Mt Hypipamee A beautiful forest part in the southern part of the Tableland, it is perhaps one of the most rewarding places to bird in the area.
