On my 21-day Kenyan safaris we reckoned to find around 600 species of birds and around 60 mammals, both impressive totals. In 2023 I attempted to keep a year list of mammal encounters: the list barely exceeded 20 species, while it became complicated by seeing bats and voles that I was unable to name specifically. in the evening.

And, there are 300+ species of birds in this breathtaking region of the northern Rockies. Ask how to ‘be bear aware,’ as they say. In addition to the 300+ bird species, there are 1,300 species of flora, nearly 50 mammalian species, and eight species (and subspecies) of trout in the streams.

The Anchorage area hosts a number of far norther species I could never hope to see in North Carolina, and I quickly pulled together a list of targets and my friends made a plan. I had racked up only twenty-odd species, all of which I’d have to be blindfolded to not see if I spent a year in New York City. I was not tremendously optimistic as I returned to Forest Park for a second shot at the Northern Saw-whet Owl that our beloved host Corey had tipped me off to back at the beginning of January.

The first guide bearing the National Audubon Society imprint was Audubon Bird Guide; Eastern Land Birds , written by Richard Hooper Pough, and illustrated by Don Eckelberry. Pough “with illustrations in color of every species” by Don Eckelberry, Doubleday, 1946. The grand total is 817 species! SPECIES ACCOUNTS.

But bear with me for a second: this post presents a different context for a different squirrel. Germany, like most of Europe and very much unlike North America, is home to only one species of squirrel. This is not about feeder competition and chicken wire. And aren’t you glad it is. This amazing area has a widely varied habitat range, and the variety of birds observed here, in nearly 20 different eBird.org hotspots average almost 200 species each. Now, bear in mind, I just left Costa Rica, where seeing a trogon is really nice, but not all that uncommon, so I don’t believe I was as awed as the occasion called for.
