But the jawbone…that was from a bat! Oehlenschlager apologized that he couldn’t say the exact species of bat. It was either a big brown bat or a hoary bat. Oehlenschlager said that because two teeth were missing, he couldn’t give a positive id on the bat.

In total, there are eight species of hornbills in Borneo – the best place to see them seems to be the Kinabatagan River area (also known as Sukau). Another item they feed on is hunting edible bird nest swiftlets, which are quite common in edible swiftlet houses in Sabah, Malaysia ( source ).

The Purple Swamp-hen ( Porphyrio porphyrio ) I turned south, walking past large groups of picnickers which were being patrolled by Australian White Ibis , one of the species of ibis also known as the Sacred Ibis. Pairs of these a are common sight on open grassy areas in Australia.

Between the 22 of December and the 31st I managed to see 171 species of bird, this had climbed to 219 by the time I had left of the 11th of January. This included 5 days without family, but I didn’t get more than 35 extra species without them. And the birds? I saw plenty. The entrance to hell has a walkway. Danum Valley.

I am here to write on birds, however, and I shall bat in my crease as the cricketers say. It was the first record of this species in Trinidad & Tobago and looks almost identical to our regularly seen Tropical Pewee. After not even an hour in position, I noticed a flycatcher hunting about twenty metres away.
