There had been a grader along the fence-line many years ago leaving a lower area that was very flooded and the raised dirt it had left behind was the perfect location for a pair of nesting Australian Painted Snipe. The more brightly coloured female bird remained at the back of the family group as they swam to shore.

This year is the eighteenth year since we discovered our first Pied Oystercatcher nest on Cable Beach in Broome and it didn’t take us long to realise that they are not at all successful at raising young due to egg and chick predation. He last raised a chick successfully in 2016 and has nested in this area since 2008.

Pheasant Coucals are also a member of the cuckoo family, but are unique because they do actually raise their own young. All other cuckoos lay their eggs in other birds’ nests and let them raise them. The Eastern Koel has only been recorded in Broome on very rare occasions.

It is not unusual to find a group of trial nest scrapes in a breeding territory and then the female lays the eggs in the nest that she prefers. The kakariki are an odd group of parakeets, particularly in terms of their distribution. Compared to that of say the Collared Kingfisher , for example, it would hardly raise an eyebrow. Let’s back up a little bit and introduce the parakeets. The Orange-fronted Parakeet varies very little from that of the Yellow-crowned Parakeet.

On August 20th we entered the bird hide at about 10am and were noting the birds present and six crocodiles on the far bank when suddenly a large crocodile grabbed one of the Little Black Cormorants that was feeding in a small group in the middle of the billabong.
