This week finds us flying from Melbourne, Australia, to Alice Springs, in the center of this incredibly large country. This is truly the center if Australia, no matter what method you use to decided the actual location of dead center. But the diversity, that I have found to be Australia, remains.

You would often hear the Rainbow Bee-eaters tapping away as they killed an insect by bashing it on the branches before consuming it. The dove family were represented by Peaceful Doves, Diamond Doves and Bar-shouldered Doves and Crested Pigeons came down to the river to drink regularly. Rainbow Bee-eater.

The one bird I did not see here, however, was the Bateleur Eagle … One highlight in the area is the Saddle-billed Stork , likely to be the tallest species in the stork family. Another member of the stork family, the African Openbill , looks like it is could benefit from a good orthodontist. And sadly, it is listed as Endangered.

They are also threatened by cultural beliefs that lead to killing them because they’re seen as harbingers of death and bad luck. They are also hunted. This is a great summer read.

Fantails are a family that, apart from the aberrant Silktail and Pygmy Drongo, are extremely similar in appearance and behaviour. The New Zealand Fantail was once placed with the Grey Fantail of Australia, but are now treated as separate, because of science. The family also reaches into India and as far east as samoa and Fiji.

The city of Salisbury, Australia describes them as “the most naturally inquisitive, intelligent, playful, (and destructive!) In the southwestern of Western Australia (not where these photos were taken), the Little Corella actually is an introduced bird species listed as a category 3 declared pest ( source ).

We saw several of the kingfisher family whilst on our trip, including Azure Kingfisher, Red-backed Kingfisher and Sacred Kingfisher. Sadly we did see a lot of road kill and no doubt a result of people driving at night. Forest Kingfisher. Our trip was camping based and so we planned to avoid all wet weather where possible.

While I cannot claim to fully understand the topic, “The Impact of Deafness to the Survival of the Newborn Cells in the Brain of Juvenile White-rumped Munia, Lonchura striata “, the authors first deafened some White-rumped Munias via surgery and then killed them a few weeks later. One puzzle solved. I can see their point.
