It does not seem that long since the shorebirds all returned from their northerly migration and already we are starting to see the change in their breeding plumage. The shorebirds will start to leave Broome next month to breed high up in the Arctic and will mostly fly non-stop to the Yellow Sea in China.

Black-faced Cuckoo-shrikes – Coracina novaehollandiae are a common bird species around our home in Broome, Western Australia. They are present throughout much of Australia and as their name would suggest they have a black face! They are often nearby and breed locally, but we don’t always have them at the water.

In Australia we encounter the subspecies Limosa limosa melanuroides. The Black-tailed Godwits that we observe here in Australia breed in east Siberia and Mongolia. In non-breeding plumage they are almost brown, but add a reddish brown colour when they are in breeding plumage.

Yellow-faced Honeyeaters – Calygavis chrysops are found in the eastern and south eastern parts of Australia. They are not present in Western Australia or the Northern Territory, so not a bird species that we get to observe very often. Yellow-faced Honeyeaters migrate in huge numbers between March and May.

There are flights heading north each evening and these birds will leave our shores to breed in the northern hemisphere. They will call and fly upwards and then either decide it is not quite right to head off on that particular evening or they will get themselves into a V formation and off they go. Thankfully the predictions of the amount of rain to expect here were overestimated, but sadly there are many parts of Australia on the east coast where they have had record-breaking rainfall and it has cost many lives and homes. The most common member of the Grebe species around Broome is the Australasian Grebe- Tachybaptus novaehollandiae and it has taken advantage of our exceptionally good Wet Season early this year and has been breeding very successfully. During breeding season the Australasian Grebe has a very distinct pale yellow patch at the base of the bill.

After a very good Wet Season with substantially more rain than normal over the first few months of 2017 the land was flooded and a huge variety of birds arrived in the Broome area to take advantage of the ideal conditions for breeding. Two birds on the right and one on the left-note the bills!

In the case of the two pairs of Pied Oystercatchers that did actually hatch their eggs and have chicks for a few days they did lay once more, but then they failed to even hatch the second clutch and then no longer attempted to breed. One of the surviving Pied Oystercatcher chicks in 2012 made itself famous right here.

The flocks are getting smaller day by day as they migrate to the northern hemisphere to breed. The shorebirds will then spread out across the tundra to breed and they will no longer be close to each other. The shorebirds have been feeding up and changing into their breeding plumage. The resident shorebirds will start to breed.

Over the past few months there have been a lot of birds breeding around Broome with the excellent rain events that we have been having and the vegetation is at long last revived. This is the only highway around Australia in this part of the country and we don’t need it falling to bits! The Great Egrets , Little Egrets and Intermediate Egrets are in breeding plumage and look quite spectacular. Intermediate Egret in breeding plumage. Water across the highway. Glossy Ibis and Egrets.

With the extent of the tall vegetation many species have been able to breed and hide for many months and now they are becoming more visible from the highway. White-necked Heron The Great Egrets , Intermediate Egrets and Little Egrets continue to feed right against the edge of the highway oblivious to the traffic.

Glossy Ibis very rarely come into town, but they do breed very close by when the conditions are right. In the capital cities around Australia the Australian White Ibis has adapted to the environment. Poinciana trees are not native to Australia, but they grow very well in the north and are often found in local parks. The nest in the header photo in a Poinciana tree belongs to a Little Friarbird and they have been breeding recently and there are many juvenile birds about. They also offer an excellent opportunity for birds to nest.

This year, like every year, the Pied Oystercatchers have not given up on trying to successfully breed along our coast here in Broome. The breeding season started early this year with the first eggs laid at the end of May. This male bird is actually one of the oldest Pied Oystercatchers in Australia at the moment.

Boabs are typically shown with no leaves in any travel promotion to the Kimberley area of Western Australia. The highway was wet right to the edges in many places, but water was not flowing over the highway. At this time of year, after rain, there always appears to be an abundance of birds breeding. The metal band was placed on the right tarsus. There it stood on top of a rock as if it was waiting for us to come along and admire it and tell the world that it had come to Australia during its non-breeding cycle of the year! The upper flag was blue with engraving on it and the lower flag was white and had no writing on it.

Wood Sandpipers are more common in the north of Australia than the south and they breed in the northern hemisphere with a range that covers from Scandinavia in the west to Siberia and Kamchatka in the east. We observe the Wood Sandpipers come and go each year, but their exact migration route and breeding grounds remains a mystery.

Interestingly for me, the research paper calls throwing out the eggs infanticide, which makes me feel a bit queasy as this might potentially be on the wrong side of the Roe vs. Wade (or “Right vs. Wrong”, as The Onion calls it) debate. The fully fledged Pied Oystercatcher chick is the bird on the right. Non-breeding Pied Oystercatchers join flocks either to the north or south of Gantheaume Point. They do not attempt to breed for about seven years. They moved around a bit to get comfortable on the rocky outcrop. Pied Oystercatcher family at roost.
