Hongbenghe is a very small village in Yunnan, right next to the border with Myanmar. While it is listed as Least Concern, it is rare in China – the range map in the HBW barely touches Chinese territory. The White-crowned Forktail is one of the 5 forktail species that can be found in China, out of a total of 7 species.

Despite not being rare in China, this was the first time for me to see Carrion Crow at Nanhui. The Chestnut Bunting is quite a beauty, particularly when seen from the right angle. Grey-faced Buzzards are also on migration in October, passing Nanhui on the way to their wintering grounds in South East Asia.

The call was issued after the animal rights group discovered that the fur were sourced from the raccoon dog in China, ABC Radio Australia reports. About 10 million dogs in China are killed for their fur, prompting an animal rights group to seek a ban on fur trade to Australia. However, the fur is passed off as sheep skin.

Many of these migratory shorebirds will be heading into the Arctic to breed and some will make a stopover in Asia on their way to their breeding grounds. I have observed Red-necked Stint with an orange flag from Victoria and also blue and yellow flags from Bohai Bay in China, but suddenly I saw two blue flags.

Kinabalu (at 13,455 feet the highest peak in southeast Asia), and human development that has resulted in freshwater rice fields, secondary forest, and oil palm plantations, this means that Borneo offers an incredibly high degree of biodiversity. Borneo, the authors say, is under-birded. I think we need to do something about that.

The prinias are a group of around 25 Old World warbler species found in Africa and Asia. It inhabits rather dry areas within a region notorious for being one of the rainiest parts of the world, and is thus patchily distributed from Burma through Laos, Cambodia, parts of Thailand and south China, all the way to Vietnam. The Bar-backed Partridge was also one of four focal species in an investigation into illegal bird hunting in Southwestern China. If I can give you some advice: Better not be a bird in China. On our way back, three Common Bottlenose Dolphins show right next to the boat and, some time later, a Painted Lady ( Vanessa cardui ) butterfly appears some 300 metres downwind from the shore. Beside a few Yellow-legged Gulls, the rest consist of three dozen Scopoli’s Shearwater , a race of Cory’s Shearwater ( Calonectris d. diomedea ).

At this moment, Baihualing is the eBird hotspot in China which has by far the largest number of species – 486. With 398 species, Nanhui is trailing far behind despite being covered by a much larger number of checklists (2225 compared to 608). So, it is certainly justified to cover this spot in more than one post.

On the other hand, for every disturbed Nanhui, there are probably at least 10 coastal places in China that are completely undisturbed, so it all evens out. According to the HBW, “only female incubates and cares for young … [while] males leave during [the] incubation period” Right on, sharpies!

The wonderful family Meropidae contains 27 dazzling species, of which Africa is endowed with no less than 20 species, the balance occurring across Asia and with one as far afield as Australia. European Bee-eaters can be found through-out Africa at the right time of year. Their preferred habitat is dry woodlands and scrublands.

The Chestnut-winged Babbler is known as one of the host species of the Asian Drongo-cuckoo in Southeast Asia ( source ), a claim to fame that most bird species would probably prefer to avoid. Fortunately, barbets are fairly common in Yunnan, China, so it was not a particular disappointment. the Black-naped Monarch should not.

According to this Associated Press story, if you are wearing a Sean John jacket with fur trim purchased from Macy's, that trim might have come from a dog indigenous to Asia known as a "raccoon dog." But when HSUS purchased several of these jackets, the jackets arrived bearing the labels "Made in China" and "genuine raccoon fur."

Shanghai parks are rather crowded and noisy places, but the goshawks – who unlike me have lived in China all their lives – apparently do not mind. A paper titled “Crested Goshawk Accipiter trivirgatus may adapt well to life in urban areas across its range in Asia” already made the same observation in 2018.
