I've always thought of horse-drawn carriages the way I think about greyhound racing or fur: Most people are against them, so why are they still around? Greyhound racing is dying, for sure, but not because people are necessarily against it. Regardless, they are joining Friends of Animals and Hearts for Animals on Saturday December 5.

If they don't thrive on a diet without animals, then they should eat some animal products. I'm choosing to believe I willed it to happen because I just couldn't take buying all of those animal products. And Charles seemed to be a non-thriver each other time I transitioned to a diet with protein that comes from grains.

No playing with little white dogs, which isn't uncommon for greyhounds. He was 85 pounds (large for a greyhound), very muscular (odd for a greyhound) and spectacularly gorgeous, with Pharaoh Hound-like ears. Far more than a diabetic greyhound. And the same should be true for nonhuman animals.

I was thinking about the Poplar Spring Animal Sanctuary calendar of rescued animals photographed by Deb Durant that's on my refrigerator. It's on the refrigerator, but when you open the refrigerator door you'll see nothing that came from the animals in the calendar. I call my greyhounds sneaky activism opportunities.

Thanksgiving 2010 will be Baby Sky's first, and our opportunity to introduce her to the notion that our family doesn't eat animals (not to mention that other historical story we'll be correcting). Greyhound skin is very thin. The greyhound people tell you that, not to mention it's pretty obvious. Vetsulin was the perfect new product, except for the fact that it's animal (pig) based, unlike human insulins, and then there was the problem with quality control that was first reported last year. What a relief!

I've never discussed that Emily the kitty eats one meal of Ami vegan kibble on most days (and one of canned, animal-based food). Violet the diabetic greyhound does very well as a vegan as her recent blood work demonstrated. Charles the lame greyhound doesn't process grains well at all. She is doing fine with that. He never has.

The life expectancy of greyhounds is 12-15 years. Diabetes shortens the life expectancy of human and nonhuman animals, by years. So I went through bag by bag of everything at our small pet health food store until I found the perfect combination of dead animals and their parts. There she is. Violet was just under four-years old.

My angle on this pet peeve is my observation that many people adopt or buy an animal to satisfy a need they have. They want love, companionship, snuggling.

Just in case you were wondering what an 85-lb red fawn greyhound looks like from the back with a couple dozen acupuncture needles in him. But I would feel like a terrible caregiver if animal protein was somehow the answer and I refused to try it. The needles between his toes were apparently not of the painless variety. I've had those.
