After failing miserably at a long pamphlet in 2007, I decided to shorten it by 50% and focus on a different audience: people who use animals. I wanted to reach people who use animals, but also people who don't, yet who nevertheless advocate for the regulation of the use of animals or give money to organizations that do.

Greyhound skin is very thin. The greyhound people tell you that, not to mention it's pretty obvious. Vetsulin was the perfect new product, except for the fact that it's animal (pig) based, unlike human insulins, and then there was the problem with quality control that was first reported last year. What a relief!

And I received confirmation of something I've known since 2004, when we adopted retired racing greyhound, Violet Rays: That there's sort of a critical period for dog-behavior acquisition, and if it's missed, the dog isn't likely to mature into the type of loving being whose behavior we've come to associate with "pet" dogs. The life expectancy of greyhounds is 12-15 years. Diabetes shortens the life expectancy of human and nonhuman animals, by years. Unfortunately, Violet doesn't like her vegan food or most other food, but will eat food that smells terrible for some reason. There she is. She has beaten the odds and made it another year.

Just in case you were wondering what an 85-lb red fawn greyhound looks like from the back with a couple dozen acupuncture needles in him. But I would feel like a terrible caregiver if animal protein was somehow the answer and I refused to try it. And of course, I will use the meetings as an opportunity for vegan outreach.

I began my journey by discovering something you all probably know, which is that you can substitute cooked black-eyed peas or adzuki beans for flour, like in the recipe for the above vegan flourless chocolate cake. Because we planned to adopt I had been researching eco-friendly, vegan nursery items but had yet to purchase a thing. I did go to Babies-R-Us for some odds and ends and here's the Animal Person-related experience. Animals are all over the place at Babies-R-Us. She sniffed Sky up and down and walked away. At least at this stage.
