It was one of these species, the Victoria’s Riflebird , that I was lucky enough to see this year in the Atherton Tablelands near Cairns.

They feed on insects stirred up by the herds, at times sitting on the animal itself picking off ticks and other insects. This particular bird species is not common around Broome, but easily found in Derby. The Little Egret was showing some breeding plumage and it is the time of year for many birds to breed. The tide was out and we were hopeful of a Great-billed Heron , but luck was not on our side for this species on this visit.

Birds of the Indonesian Archipelago covers 1,417 species, 601 endemics, 98 vagrants, 8 introduced and 18 undescribed species. Only one bird species has become extinct (Javan Lapwing), but many others are endangered, with some considered close to extinction (not surprising in an area with species restricted to one or two small islands).

It is now very hot and dry inland and the temperature does not drop much at night, so you go to bed early and get up early like the animals and birds. So I thought I could give fair warning about one of the more dangerous birds out there, even more dangerous than the Lesser Goldfinch , and one of the more common and familiar birds of Australia and New Zealand, the Australian Magpie. There were three Wood Sandpipers present on this visit, due to the fact that it is summer here and they reside here during the summer months and then head north to breed in coming months.

Apparently they breed to the south and return to feed at Lake Bindegolly. There was evidence of terns breeding at some earlier stage by the remaining carcasses in the bush. After spending Christmas Day birding around Broome and observing 92 species we spent the week making a mental note of what bird species were where.
