This month we were able to go to Europe again, for our first real vacation in a few years. One of the groups that doesn’t seem to become any less common in fall is the T**s, known in North America as Chickadees and their relatives. Some of my readers may recall that my wife and I went to Spain a few months ago.

Johann Georg Wagner has seven birds named after him, from a chachalaca to a woodpecker, but would he have found more if hadn’t accidentally shot himself while out collecting? So, too, did Captain Meriwether Lewis, (he of woodpecker fame), but to this day nobody knows whether he was shot or committed suicide.

These two shorebirds are exceedingly common in western Europe. Iberian Green Woodpecker, Madrid, Spain. Mexico has a good number of greenish or rusty Woodpeckers. Cardinal Woodpecker. Three species of woodpecker, from the large Bearded Woodpecker to the smaller Golden-tailed Woodpecker and the even smaller Cardinal Woodpecker, searched the trunks and branches, while on the smallest tips of the branches the tiny Long-billed Crombec clambered about in search of food.

Then of course, we have amazing birds such as Wallcreeper , Hoopoe , and Black Woodpecker. For sure we have great birds like Great Crested Grebe , Great Bustard , and Great Spotted Woodpecker.

Sure, their field guide, The Collins Guide , claims six species but two, the Corsican Nuthatch and the Algerian Nuthatch , have extremely limited ranges and one of those two isn’t actually found in Europe. I am fortunate in that I have encountered Eurasian Nuthatches on eleven occasions in three countries on my various trips to Europe.

Sharing much the same story with its cousin the Northern Bald Ibis, a closely related species that during the Middle Ages was widely known throughout Europe as the Waldrapp (meaning “Forest Crow”). By 300 years ago it had disappeared from the whole of Europe and this pattern followed in the Middle East and North Africa.

I understand the rationale behind it, but it’s still sad.

Birders from Western Europe will surely note, upon seeing Black-eared Wheatear here, the difference between this Eastern race and the Western race that they may have seen in Spain or France. Black-eared Wheatear passes through in slightly smaller numbers, with the main migration taking place in the last week or so of March each year.

There is a Linnet at Kissena Corridor Park in Queens, and though I bird this park regularly, the Linnet, a bird regularly found in Europe, Asia, and North Africa and also named in a sweet song by Stephen Sondheim (Green Finch and Linnet Bird from Sweeny Todd) has eluded me. I needed a book showing a Linnet. A miscellaneous pot indeed!
