What the rings reveal

I photographed it at Gorleston, on the Suffolk coast, on 5 September 2020, but I discovered that bird had been rung, as an adult, at nearby Great Yarmouth on 16 November 2013, so it was probably already nine years old, and could well have been older. However, I doubt if it will be returning to Northern Europe this spring.

Sasol Birds of Southern Africa, 5th edition

With ongoing atlassing projects, the maps were surprisingly accurate even in the previous editions – to someone coming from Europe, at least, and in the 5th edition they are further updated. Phil Hockey (1956–2013), former Director of the Fitz Institute at UCT, was a recognised authority on the biology of southern African birds.

Into an Uncertain Future

So there you go, Europe! The months of January and February 2013 were particularly dark and gloomy. March 2013 was the coldest March in more than 100 years. April 2013 was extremely dry and also unusually cold. May 2013 was the wettest May on record, like… ever, with extreme flood events that even killed people.
