Sasol Birds of Southern Africa, 5th edition

With 500 pages, this guide is a bit on the heavy side, but still not too much, having in mind that half of the region falls into the tropics and the edition is dealing with almost a thousand species (989 to be exact). Distribution maps show the relative abundance of a species in the region and also indicate resident or visiting status.

What the rings reveal

They are of the race islandica , a sub species of the nominate race, limosa. I photographed it at Gorleston, on the Suffolk coast, on 5 September 2020, but I discovered that bird had been rung, as an adult, at nearby Great Yarmouth on 16 November 2013, so it was probably already nine years old, and could well have been older.

Into an Uncertain Future

So there you go, Europe! The months of January and February 2013 were particularly dark and gloomy. March 2013 was the coldest March in more than 100 years. April 2013 was extremely dry and also unusually cold. May 2013 was the wettest May on record, like… ever, with extreme flood events that even killed people.

Chamois is an agile goat-antelope with short hooked horns, found in mountainous areas of Europe from Spain to the Caucasus. There are more than 1100 plant species, the most valuable being the 76 endemics. Other species include Roe Deer (also spotted), Wildcat , European Pine Marten and Otter.
