I was just getting back into birding, and had only gone to some urban sites, during 2012 and 2013. But when on June 23, 2013 I decided to follow a road just to see where it led, and it led to Pino Real, it was the first in a whole chain of exciting site discoveries. That chain continues to this day. But, thank God, it has not.

Gazetted as the “nature monument” in 2013, one of the few remaining – Bojcinska Forest by the village of Progar covers 670 ha / 1650 ac, with around 108 bird species and some 60 species of mammals. And that is where Q. and I were heading this morning. We had a Common Cuckoo and several Northern Lapwings by the roadside.

This section of the Great Northern Highway has an impressive list on eBird of 191 species along the length of highway that crosses Roebuck Plains. In 2013 we had a very wet day in June. Different times of day or night show different bird species. We then counted over 300 White-necked Herons feeding across the flooded landscape.

After the rain subsided, I continued down the road and came across a fruiting tree with quite a bit of commotion around it – Black-whiskered Vireo , Sad Flycatcher , Jamaican Woodpecker , Jamaican Spindalis , Loggerhead Kingbird , and Ring-tailed Pigeon were among the species present. and called in a pair of Jamaican Becards.

What elevated the kings of kings above other species this time around was their gregarious behavior. In February of 2013, I wrote a piece outlining my thoughts on which exotic bird species should be added to the American Bird Association (ABA) checklist. In 2014, the Florida Ornithological Society Records Committee (FOSRC) voted to add this species to the Florida state list. The ABA Checklist Committee quickly followed suit.

An associated issue is that the Belize and Costa Rica guides share many of the same descriptions of species, written by Howell. Similarly, descriptions of species repeated across volumes do not lose their accuracy with each publication. Other species are splits and lumped and have had their names changed.
