Any doubt I had about the need for a book about rare birds in the United States And Canada were wiped out on a Sunday evening in early February with two birding friends. The authors set June/July 2011 as the cut-off date, and were able to add noteworthy records up to November 2012, the date the manuscript was sent to the publisher.

I know from experience how accessible Dennis is, last year he helped me identify a damselfly I photographed in Costa Rica (Argia anceps, no common name). If you’ve birded the eastern United States, you’ve probably seen this dragonfly.

Living in Colorado, I was practically next door neighbors to a Spix’s Macaw, “Presley,” who was discovered in an Evergreen living room—the only known Spix’s Macaw in the United States—and who was repatriated to Brazil before I even knew he existed. It seemed like a really fun way to spend the day! I thought that was clever.

Though its native range in the United States was just the southwest, the House Finch is now the most familiar pink finch in North America. Though the Kazakhstan sightings are up there in terms of my favorite birding experiences my favorite pink finch sighting is a Gray-crowned Rosy-Finch. Not that I’m complaining!

a shy Yellow-billed Cuckoo But my real Magee Marsh boardwalk experience was to wait until early Sunday morning, the final day of the Midwest Birding Symposium. But even the thirty meters or so that we walked down the boardwalk was enough to net us a Yellow-billed Cuckoo that a field trip led by the Kaufmans had found.

There is no experience comparable to birding a dump, and, I have to say, I have never experienced a dump like this one. Seeing this giant, awkward yet majestic bird walk through the densely littered landscape was a surreal experience. (4) A Garganey showed up in Ohio in 2011 and I had a chance to chase it and I didn’t.

Experiments in the field (the famed Asa Wright Nature Center veranda) involving Bananaquits and bananas came up with numbers ranging from 7 to 16, but a tanager always came along to interfere with Bananaquits’ noisy appreciation of their namesake fruit.
