Irruptions of Snowy Owls in 2011 and again in 2013 found these Arctic birds wintering well south of their usual range , in some cases straying down to Bermuda and even Hawaii. They do winter there, as well as in northern parts of Europe, in eastern and central Canada, and across the northeastern and central United States, but like many other birds named after places they essentially have a misnomer. The last time I visited Portola was in the summer of 2011 when the Swainson’s Hawks ( Buteo swainsoni ) were nesting there. From Canada, this migration is more than 10,000 km each way, a distance second among raptors only to that of the Arctic Peregrine Falcon 1. Click on photos for full sized images.

While at the 2011 Midwest Birding Symposium I made two visits to the refuge, once at dawn and once early in the afternoon. Together with Cedar Point and West Sister Island, which are both managed by the staff at Ottaway, a total of over 9,000 acres of prime habitat on the south shore of Lake Erie are protected.

In 2011, my wife and I sailed into a beautiful little anchorage here in the Sea of Cortez, on Isla Espritu Santos. while showing diminishing numbers in the north and northeastern part of the US and Canada, are quite abundant down here. Years went by, and I had still not been able to track down a real live shrike to add to my list.

Proposal 2013-A-5 would remove the Hawaiian honeycreepers out of their own subfamily (Drepanidinae) and place them in the subfamily Carduelinae near the rosefinches, which a 2011 study showed to be their closest relatives. This change has been needed and tracks with our best understanding of finch relationships. Shearwater split.

This is an aerial photograph of the Athabasca Oil Sands when things were slow in 1984. Oil sand mining has a large impact on the environment.

As it turns out, XS41059 was banded in the Scottish Highlands in 2011. Birds Arctic Canada shorebirds' Something else stood out, the word “London” This bird had a British Museum ring, these birds were islandica ! I’m still awaiting more details (male or female, age etc.)

Richard totaled 352 species, an impressive number, by seeing almost all of the regularly occurring New York birds and the vast majority of the rarities that showed up in 2011.
