So, to cut things short, there is sickness all around me, and I have thus decided to have my February post whistle to that tune as well and give an update to the mysterious die-off amongst our Eurasian Blackbirds that occurred around my home turf in Heidelberg last summer – blogged about here. We also saw a Blackbird and heard a Wren at the bottom of Kanoureses track at 18:00. The Vultures were great, and while we weren’t certain, we speculated that we thought we could see a vulture chick on the cliff where one of the 3 landed. Then, last bird of the day was a Crossbill at Leivada Tou Pasha at 18:18.

While at the 2011 Midwest Birding Symposium I made two visits to the refuge, once at dawn and once early in the afternoon. Together with Cedar Point and West Sister Island, which are both managed by the staff at Ottaway, a total of over 9,000 acres of prime habitat on the south shore of Lake Erie are protected.

Having paid a visit to Puerto Rico in 2011 with a friend of mine, the next logical island to visit was Jamaica with about 28 endemics plus several near-endemics. I was beginning to worry about Jamaican Blackbird , as I had missed it the previous day at Hardwar Gap and would have only one more shot at this species if I missed it here.

Red Knot XS41059 was banded as a 1st year bird on September 11, 2011 near the town of Tain in the Scottish Highlands on the south shore of Dornoch Firth.
