First Phoebe of 2020

I saw my first migratory Eastern Phoebe of 2020 this morning at Cunningham Park in my home borough of Queens, where I was looking for my first Rusty Blackbirds of the year. (I 2011 – 19 March. I found them too!) The phoebe was busy flycatching over a vernal pool, often hitting the water as it chased bugs. And was it late or early?

Once upon a time in Bojcinska Forest

Common Redstart , European Greenfinch , Song Thrush , Eurasian Blackbird , Common Nightingale , Eurasian Blue and Great T**s , Eurasian Blackcap and Eurasian Nuthatch were singing from every direction conceivable. The most numerous birds are Common Chaffinches. We entered an area that was clear-cut in 2010.

Eastern Bluebirds and Ruby-throated Hummingbirds drop by periodically and Red-winged Blackbirds maintain their angry vigil in defense of their pond. Turkey Vultures , American Crows , and Red-tailed Hawks continue to patrol the skies.

Best Bird of the Weekend (Third of October 2011)

I still managed to get to Jones Beach and see some birds and while I could choose Marbled Godwit , American Golden Plover , or Rusty Blackbird as my Best Bird of the Weekend I think I will choose the hordes of American Oystercatchers that are so fun to see.

Typical of many sports mascots , the Rochester Red Wings’ spirit animal doesn’t look much like its namesake, assuming the team is named for a Red-Winged Blackbird. And the Red Wings won… nice! Instead, the team mascot looks suspiciously like a Cardinal on steroids. What was your best bird of the weekend?
