To my shock, I had also never included a Wild Turkey on an eBird list before Tuesday. Finally, a birder up front cried out, “A Pileated Woodpecker !”, ”, and we all rushed up for a fantastic view of this, the third-largest surviving woodpecker in the world. Both were welcome additions.

Madera Canyon: The feeders at Santa Rita Lodge

The resident Wild Turkey population is always ready for an easy meal at the feeders. Most days you will get a good look at the Arizona Woodpecker. It is not often you can get two different grosbeaks in one picture, but here is a Black-headed Grosbeak, with a Blue Grosbeak. This is a great place to see a good number of Mexican Jays.

My 2018 Great Backyard Bird Count

As the Red-Shouldered Hawk seen above screamed overhead, Acorn Woodpeckers not only treated themselves to the woodpecker feeder, they had to attack the sunflower feeders as well. Wild Turkeys were out in full display. Sunday was no exception. All in all, I tallied 44 species. Fun birding!
