Golden-fronted Woodpeckers are exceedingly common here, both in the city and in the countryside. Or, you may see dozens. Can somebody please confirm this for me?

Raising my binoculars, I picked out not only Turkey Vultures , with their red heads and silver flight feathers, but also Black Vultures , with gray heads and just their wing tips sporting silver. Two Purple Gallinules , two Limpkins … Raptors included Turkey Vultures , Ospreys , White-tailed , Grey-headed (so well seen in a nearby tree!) I came with 957, and started to collect my birds like an Acorn Woodpecker collects its nuts. Other shorebirds included Semipalmated Plover and Least Sandpipers.

Gila Woodpeckers and Ladder-backed Woodpeckers are seen in the Cottonwood trees, especially near the boat dock. Here is one of our local Ladder-backed Woodpeckers. Both Turkey Vultures as well as Black Vultures can see seen circling over head. Here are a few of those Ruddy Ducks, perhaps the most common duck in this area.

Corey, on the other hand, had several stellar birds this weekend, including a Sora at Central Park, a Vesper Sparrow at Willow Lake Preserve, an Orange-crowned Warbler at Jacob Riis Park, and a Broad-winged Hawk and five Turkey Vultures from the hawkwatch platform at Fort Tilden.

In the summer, my bird lists mostly consist of mockingbirds and the ever-aloft Turkey Vultures , but winter in Florida is an excellent time to look for different avian varieties: the songbirds are back. The first birds were normal; the Turkey Vultures , Mourning Doves , a distant Red-bellied Woodpecker cackling.

This Elegant Trogon is shown below, and again in the second image down, after turning around so I could get the back plumages as well. Another new Lifer that joined the list that morning was the Mexican Jay.

I find it amazing that after 19 guides, it is still possible to describe a Great Blue Heron or Turkey Vulture with new words, and Earley certainly does that here. Lengthy captions point out key identification features, mostly plumage-based, sometimes including behavior, size, and structure.
