It was also nice to see a Magnificent Frigatebird soar overhead and it really paid keeping our eyes to the skies as later in the morning when Mike spotted another frigatebird and we raised our bins to watch it he also spotted a Caribbean Martin up there which ended up being our only one of the trip. Along the way we witnessed a Great Blue Heron rookery with a fly-by Bullock’s Oriole , a pod of American White Pelicans just chilling, a pair of Red-tailed Hawks making goo-goo eyes at each other, Cliff Swallows swarming like mosquitoes, and Long-billed Curlews that nearly blended into their scrubby surroundings.

Eagle-eyed Pat spotted a Lesser Black-backed Gull in nonbreeding plumage and other birders that week noted a Thayer’s Gull (which we may have seen too–I mean, who expects Iceland Gull in April?).

Fortunately, the very abundant 2018 rains raised the water level to heights I had never seen, and so far, that seems to be making up for this year’s poor rains. Hundreds of White Pelicans and Long-billed Dowitchers proved the winter season has arrived. The west half of the lake is never more than a few feet deep.

The Australian Pelican obviously decided it was safe to continue on with its feeding after the incident and observed the crocodile consuming the Magpie Goose. There were plenty of Australian Pelicans, Royal Spoonbills, Black-winged Stilt and Gull-billed Terns, but the numbers were down on the Plumed Whistling Ducks which normally line the edge of the ponds in their thousands.
