While neither is an endemic they are two of the five hummingbird species found in Puerto Rico and we wanted to make sure to see them, mostly for Mike’s sake as I had seen both in Culebra last year. Brown Pelican and Brandt’s Cormorant roost here and can be seen flying in and out all day. Black Oyster-catchers will usually be found on the rocks too, but this morning each of these species gave their best views in the receding waves. There is a raised, walled area to the right (north towards the entrance of the bay).

We still observed 45 species of birds in the reserve in about an hour and there are always raptors to observe as well as the usual water birds. There were plenty of Australian Pelicans, Royal Spoonbills, Black-winged Stilt and Gull-billed Terns, but the numbers were down on the Plumed Whistling Ducks which normally line the edge of the ponds in their thousands. A short walk found us both species despite the tide being rather low. Striated Heron. Common Sandpiper.
