American White Pelicans spend their winter months along the Gulf states, California, parts of Arizona, and Mexico down into Central America. They migrate north through the Western United States, breeding in pockets all the way up through Canada.

They occur mainly in western and southern portions of North America, breeding inland in colonies on remote islands and wintering along warm southern coasts 1. Unlike the Brown Pelican, the American White Pelican scoops up fish while swimming.

I should have known that birding High Island meant I would be 20 minutes away from a place where hundreds of thousands of shorebirds and waterbirds rest, feed, breed, and generally have a good time. Multitudes, hundreds of Brown Pelicans and Terns–Least, Common, Foster’s, Sandwich, Royal, and Caspian. American Avocets.

Their population is in serious decline, so their breeding colonies are monitored by biologists. I raised them, banded them and released them back to their colony site that summer. But I did one Brown Pelican release that was memorable. Biologists are trying to get them to adopt nest boxes, but no luck with the CA birds so far.
