Multitudes, hundreds of Brown Pelicans and Terns–Least, Common, Foster’s, Sandwich, Royal, and Caspian. Eagle-eyed Pat spotted a Lesser Black-backed Gull in nonbreeding plumage and other birders that week noted a Thayer’s Gull (which we may have seen too–I mean, who expects Iceland Gull in April?).

Unlike other birds that drink one sip at the time and raise their heads to swallow, pigeons and sandgrouses drink like asses, lowering their beaks into the water and taking as much as they like. Cattle Egret Bubulcus ibis. Dalmatian Pelican Pelecanus crispus. Indian Pond Heron Ardeola grayii. Asian Openbill Anastomus oscitans.

He raised his binoculars above his head and cried out with courage and clarity, “I am Sparticus!” Brown Pelican – Pelecanus occidentalis. Cattle Egret – Bubulcus ibis. American White Pelican – Pelecanus erythrorhynchos. Something needed to be done. Somebody had to take one for the team.
