The first one is the Blue-naped Parrot. That is mainly the Philippines, as indicated by the species name lucionensis (Luzon is the Philippines’ biggest island).

About halfway between Marymount Road and Upper Thomson Road we had the pleasure of sitting and observing Blue-crowned Hanging Parrots. Blue-crowned Hanging Parrot. In this study, published in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, a group of juvenile zebra finches was allowed to interact with an adult. Adult zebra finches change their vocalizations when singing to juveniles. Another group simply heard adult songs played through a speaker.

There were 12 Red-necked Avocet feeding in the ponds and along the fenceline there were Zebra Finch, Peaceful Doves and Diamond Doves nipping back and forth for water. We also soon realised that it would be advisable to go to bed when the birdlife went quiet, because the bird species we had seen so far would be up with first light!

Geikie Gorge

The road towards Geikie Gorge from Fitzroy Crossing is also worth taking slowly because there are some good species to be observed. There were small groups of Double-barred Finches, Zebra Finch and also Crimson Finches. I photographed one to show the brightness displayed, but for a better look at this species you can look here.
