The birding is not exceptional, but you can easily see some of Singapore’s and South-east Asia’s more common species and it does throw up the occasional jewel. My personal list for Paser Ris runs to 75 birds over 15 visits that average out at around 25 species per outing. My favourite site in Singapore is Paser Ris. Spotted Wood-owl.

White-bellied Sea-Eagle nest with Budgerigars above There were numerous Whistling Kites sitting in nests and we were intrigued to see that Zebra Finch had built their own nests in the base of the nest. One Whistling Kite nest had five Zebra Finch nests in the underside of the big nest.

They contributed 150 lists accounting for 1032 species and more than 36,000 individual birds. Thus 100 species were missed by the time he woke up and noticed that eBird had reset the counters at midnight(do you guys have nothing better to do?). Zebra Dove – Geopelia striata. We had already done our Christmas Day bird list and achieved 110 bird species around the Broome area. We were very pleased to find 82 of the bird species in the town area and then travelled out of town to the last remaining water at an ephemeral lake close to the highway to achieve 110 by the end of the day. Whilst we were there we had Rainbow Bee-eaters , Willie Wagtails , Paperbark Flycatcher , Pied Butcherbirds , Red-winged Parrots and a White-faced Heron use it. Another bird species that we almost always observe in this location is the Common Bronzewing. There is a boab tree that is high up on the rock face that is always popular.

We soon had a decent list in our notebook and there were a few bird species that we had not yet seen this year. On our last visit in October last year we had 70 bird species for our visit. There were literally hundreds of Peaceful Doves , Diamond Doves and both Zebra Finch and Long-tailed Finch coming in to drink. As we scanned around the lake observing numerous bird species more and more species came in to drink and bathe. There were also Crested Pigeons and Bar-shouldered Doves. Australian Bustard drinking.

We were surprised to observe Zebra Finch , because there did not appear to be any water, but they could have been accessing water on the station and coming to the crater for food. It is of course the food of the Night Parrot , but none were observed on this occasion! Heading around the rim. The rim trail. Dragon on the rim. Camel bush.

The first birds that we saw when entering the area were Black-faced Woodswallows , Galahs , Zebra Finch , Budgerigars and White-winged Trillers. Their colour can vary from very dark brown to very pale brown and the specimen at The Terraces was one of the paler of the species. Bourke’s Parrot. Brown Falcon.

There is a good mix of bird species both large and small. We then added Red-collared Lorikeets , Red-winged Parrots , Red-tailed Black Cockatoos , Rufous Whistler and Royal Spoonbill to our list. On our drive out we observed Nankeen Kestrels and Australasian Pipit making our camping trip list over one hundred species for that location.

The edges of the pool were active with Black-fronted Dotterels , Red-kneed Dotterels , Magpie-larks and Zebra Finch coming down to drink. Sitting quietly the first afternoon we soon added more and more species to our list. Mulga Parrots and Ring-necked Parrots. Mulga Parrots. Ring-necked Parrot after a fight!

Whenever you encounter one bird species near the edge of the track it is worth stopping, because invariably there are several species in the vicinity. Crested Pigeons and Diamond Doves flew across the track in search of water and there were also Zebra Finch and Long-tailed Finch. Two distant Pied Honeyeaters.

The beats are famed for their inclusion on the nice side of the ledger and this month 9 of them shared 163 lists from 7 countries (Australia, Costa Rica, USA, UK, Serbia, China and Trinidad and Tobago) and accounted for 735 bird species. Mike doubled up with “smushed”, a new addition to the adjective list.

I mentioned recently about the arrival of the Black-tailed Native-hens at Bilyuin Pool this year, but of course there were many other species of birds to enjoy. None of those bird species are truly quiet and you soon hear them when there are no other sounds other than the natural bush. Hardy wildflowers. Pallid Cuckoo.

Despite observing Eastern Ospreys , Brahminy Kites and Red-winged Parrots on a regular basis around Broome all three bird species eluded us on Christmas Day!

One species we are more likely to find in this area than others is the Varied Sittella. The native bushes were full of Zebra Finch, Long-tailed Finch and Double-barred Finch waiting to nip to the water when they felt safe to do so. Although there were not a lot of individual species there was a great variety. White-necked Heron.

Phoebe Snetsinger was an American birder who first passed the 8,000 species mark. Before leaving the safety of the car I heeded the park’s advice and checked for animal tracks belonging to any biting, gnawing, mauling, trampling, stabbing or disembowelling species. She died in a car accident during a birding trip.

Last year they shared over 1200 checklists and managed to achieve a stunning total of 2647 species from 32 countries. Last year’s magnificent total of 2647 species is the target to beat, but other results could prove interesting. 1499 species were seen in the eastern hemisphere in 2016. The year stretches ahead.

Last year we were also halted by a badly deflated tyre , but it is only day one of the year and when you get over 100 bird species you really can’t complain. Last year we achieved 112 bird species on New Year’s Day and this year we achieved 117, but some of the easiest birds have completely eluded us. Wild Dingo.
