I went to the Space Coast Birding and Wildlife Festival in Titusville, Florida. March was very slow so I took the time to enjoy the common birds , especially woodpeckers and turkeys. I was pleased to add a new woodpecker to my Queens list too. Oh, and there were mammals too. What happened at the end of January?

That’s a threatened habitat, and one much sought after by wildlife enthusiasts. Some of the birds were astonishingly confiding, including a Rufous -capped Babbler foraging for insects, a tiny Rufous Piculet ( a diminutive type of woodpecker) and a very bold Black-and-yellow Broadbill. The reason Borneo lends itself to this type of birding holiday is that tourism in Borneo leans towards outdoorsy, wildlife based tourism anyway. Contrast this in Asia to, say, Singapore, Hong Kong or Bangkok, all of which have great birding nearby but are destinations people go to for reasons other than wildlife.

As the name suggests, the National Bison Range is mostly known for its large mammals. These mountains provide more forested habitat where we encountered another pair of Mountain Bluebirds and some Townsend’s Solitaires , although not the dramatic purplish Lewis’s Woodpeckers which nest there.
