In Costa Rica, our July birding news usually consists of interesting sightings during the mid-summer tours. Of course, unless you live on Venus, we all know that this year is far from normal and so is the birding news. As it learns to hunt and live on its own, the young bird has taken up residence in a tree right in front of the farm.

Their hunt success rate is incredibly low, the ice melting faster means shorter hunting seasons, their cubs are dying from longer swims across oceans (due to less ice being available tor rest), an their cubs are growing up with much less weight than their ancestors.

Checking the news

The next thing is starting the computer to check the news. And the first news web site is… eBird. In a few short weeks these eaglets will leave their nest, but remain in the neighbourhood for a month or two more, till the end of summer, still awaiting their parents with food while learning to fly and hunt for themselves.

Kentucky’s Crane Hunt-It Ain’t Over…

For those of you who’ve been following the drama unfolding in Kentucky regarding a sandhill crane hunt, there’s bad news. An eight-member commission unanimously approved the hunt proposal in early June. That dog don’t hunt. Which wasn’t a surprise, since everyone on the commission is a hunter.

A Predictable Retraction

Nothing prepared me to hear the news of a sighting of a lone Sungrebe at a local pond, though. I observed the Sungrebe as it methodically hunted along the boundary of this floating mass of vegetation until the sun rose high enough in the sky to drive it into the shade. Is it possible ? Certainly, anything is possible.
