I was able to find the Common Redpoll among the flock of Lesser Goldfinches and Savannah Sparrows. I even got a halfway decent photo of it before heading a few miles away to see the American Tree Sparrow and Red-naped Sapsucker. Personally, I’m waiting for the irruption of Snowy Owls to reach northern California!

Dirt hawking is a form of falconry that involves hunting rabbits and other small game with Harris Hawks (other hawk species also qualify). One of the primary reasons that these hawks make such excellent falconry birds is because they are one of only two raptor species (the other is the Galapagos Hawk ) that hunt cooperatively.

Lesser Goldfinches, Yellow-rumped Warblers, Vesper Sparrows, Lincoln Sparrows, White-crowned Sparrow, Clay-colored Sparrows , and lots and lots of Mourning Doves have taken up residence in what used to be open water. American Kestrels, Cooper Hawks , and Northern Harriers also found the hunting here to their liking.

There’s very little thrill of the hunt, very little excitement. So it was almost out of a sense of duty that the group of birders parked the bus at urban Telocote Park and unloaded to walk along the concrete viaduct in search of these unwanted, but still desired, birds. It feels almost cheap.

With the proposed hunting seasons on sandhill cranes being discussed in Tennessee, Kentucky and Wisconsin, we must not forget the whooping crane, which travels and winters in the big sandhill crane flocks. More states will doubtless join the queue of those proposing hunts. Another thing to consider. Now, it’s time to go to the top.

Like several of my favorite NWRs, this one was established as a haven for migratory birds, most notably waterfowl, during the bad old days when uncontrolled hunting and habitat loss had put the future of even species we now think of as common in doubt. An additional fly-over by more Trumpeter Swans got the group charged up.

Unfortunately, Hen Harriers die disproportionally near British Grouse moors – most likely killed illegally by people hunting grouse for sports ( source ). As with many other bird species, the Latin name of the Hen Harrier , cyaneus (“dark blue”), is not a very good description of the female.

The combination of over hunting, and the native animals susceptibility to diseases carried by domestic livestock that were allowed to graze there, completely eliminated these Bighorns by 1915. This small group of Pronghorn Antelope were right at the refuge entrance. A White-crowned Sparrow is always a beautiful subject!

These light blue boxes paint an overall view of the group as a whole and articulate guidelines for differentiating species within the group. A “Quick Alphabetical Index” on the inside front cover offers quick entry to bird groups.

Things started on a promising note, with Mountain Bluebirds and the pale local race of Song Sparrow both evident in the visitor center parking lot. On the plus side, that means that the birds are rarely disturbed and are fairly confident.

There was also a group of Bald Eagles ( Haliaeetus leucocephalus ) soaring nearby, including this juvenile, who seemed to be enjoying aerial maneuvers with its sibling. I looked over to see this beautiful male hunting from a perch directly across the bridge from me. Occasionally they would sit on the bridge railings and pose.

Most of the tourists, of which there are quite a few, opt to go on the tours provided by the Supporters, so by walking away quickly from the slowly coalescing groups we were able to lose the crowds quickly. You start hearing and catching glimpses of birds as soon as you land, particularly the fast moving Tui.
