Kerkini in Winter

10,000 Birds

Last year, in November, I notched up a dozen species of butterflies, an impressive total anywhere in Europe so late in the year. Red-breasted Geese do turn up at Kerkini regularly, and one year I watched a Red-breast mixed in with the Lessers. Perhaps they do occasionally, but not when I’ve seen them.

What is killing birds at Karla Lake (Greece)?

10,000 Birds

In early August this year, I saw 77 species here (69 on the lake, plus 8 more in the surrounding areas) but barely more than a thousand individuals. Birding Iceland on the Fly

10,000 Birds

We went to settle into our room, and since I had about an hour to kill before dinner, I took a quick walk around the property. Hundreds of birds all huddled closely together, dangling from the jagged ledges, seemingly separated by species in separate levels along the cliff. Finally, we arrived at the Hotel Latrabjarg to check in.
