At the end of October, my family flew to Florida for a multi-day road trip aimed at the beautiful springs. We had an ambitious itinerary planned: six springs within eight Florida State Parks. Water quality was good that day, and we could perfectly see the waving eelgrass, the freshwater fish species, the adorable turtles.

Don’t get me wrong, I loved every critter we observed, from the alligators to gar to turtles, but I remained on the look-out for one species in particular: the Purple Gallinule. . To me, they are the most spectacular bird in all of South Florida. Purple Gallinules are what rainbows would look like if reincarnated into a bird.

We documented the relocation of several turtle nests. Turtles continue to die at significant rates in the Gulf of Mexico.

From there, it was a short hop to Florida. This dove shares a distinguishing mark, a black collar around the nape that does not extend all the way around the neck, with the Ringed Turtle-Dove. A flock of the doves were released (accidentally, like so many other invasives) into the Bahamian ecosystem in the 1970s.

In case you haven't guessed, it is the relocation of a fresh (or not) carcass, usually with entrails spilling out, to a place more hospitable for the buzzards and hawks who evidently at least in South Florida do not judge the speed of oncoming traffic very well. At least they're dead and it wasn't my fault, but I still have a responsibility.
