My office closed early and my husband works alone in the woods, so we sheltered in place fairly early and avoided exposure. I was on my own for the evening. In terms of COVID-19’s effects on my life, I am currently one of the lucky ones. We love our house and our neighborhood, and my yard overlooks a particularly birdy pond.

We share some plant options with southern California, and others with Florida. It doesn’t seem to offer food or shelter for birds; but, being the tallest tree on the block, is an important stopover for lots of species. Occasionally, a bird will take a bite of the little apples that do form. Mostly, we don’t let them.

In case you haven't guessed, it is the relocation of a fresh (or not) carcass, usually with entrails spilling out, to a place more hospitable for the buzzards and hawks who evidently at least in South Florida do not judge the speed of oncoming traffic very well. At least they're dead and it wasn't my fault, but I still have a responsibility.

The bird in question was a Cuban Pewee that had showed up in Spanish River Park, close to where I now live in Palm Beach County Florida. After he had reached the high tundra and was approximately 10 km away from the car with no shelter in sight, it started to rain. In fact it was two weekends in a row in March of 1995.
