Binocular snobbery

I was one of a small group of journalists, each of whom was presented with the latest Dialyt 10×40 inscribed with our initials. These binoculars were made at Leica’s factory in Portugal. I visited the factory a few years ago, and the quality control there is now first class. (I With hindsight this wasn’t a great move.

Gullmania in Costa Rica

I suspect that, in keeping with the ways of its classic, parking lot scavenging brethren, the bird spends a fair amount of time getting easy eats at inaccessible fish factories. Our tropical shores just don’t get the numbers of gulls seen in other, more northerly places.

The final site of the day was sewage ponds of the sugar factory by the town of Kovin. This sugar factory is closed for years already and there is no one to talk to, but building a nesting raft here would be of greatest importance. The next morning found me at the Reva Pond with a group of primary school kids.

A Great Day Out West – Bobcats, Birds and Boardwalks

And the magic factories are two neighbors, Green Cay Wetlands and Wakodahatchee Wetlands. For years now, the feeders in winter at Green Cay have been home to a reliable group of these fantastic little seedeaters. An alligator makes an aggressive but half-hearted lunge for a group of dabbling Blue-winged and Green-winged Teals.

Their loud piping calls rising and falling in apparent group frenzy as they wait head down for some invisible signal to move on to their final breeding site. Whilst many use traditional gravel sites close to river beds, more and more are taking to man-made sites such as golf courses and even flat factory roofs.

This is what a group looks like when you arrive in their territory and they are at their burrow entrance. These owls are getting squeezed into smaller and smaller territories as developers take their habitat for homes, factories, office buildings and businesses. There are actually four birds in this photo.
