The leopards place their kill in a tree, protecting it from poaching by other predators. So, the best way to find a leopard is to find the kill. It was a fresh kill, and though it might take hours, the observers knew that eventually the leopard was going to come back for his breakfast. This is a big young ‘un!

Laughing Owl, 1909, New Zealand, photo taken by Cuthbert and Oliver Parr, pp. The Laughing Owl of New Zealand exhibited an apparent lack of fear of strangers and a propensity to spend time on the ground, making it easy pickings for introduced predators. Their photos are the only known ones taken of the owl in the wild.

In addition to longtails and rats, Wingate battles developers (of course), a rare Snowy Owl that kills 5% of the cahow population (Wingate shoots the owl, to the dismay of many), and the U.S. These are magical experiences. Ultimately, the story always comes back to the cahows, whose population grows slowly.

Hornbills are spectacular under any circumstances, but when a pair lands in a bush beside you at eye-level and begin mutual preening , it makes for a spectacular experience. The Oriental Scops Owl may well be my favorite species passing through Nanhui, Shanghai during migration. The Eurasian Wryneck also struggles a bit with regard to colors – it still looks like an experiment in different, not quite matching patterns of various shades of brown.
