We toured the Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre after dark, and we did it by foot in a group that was just my family and a guide. It was the perfect experience, the guide had astonishing eyes and found things we would have passed over if we had been alone. Sepilok was the first, and to my mind probably the best.

Two highlights of the walk back were a bright green Greater Green Leafbird and a Lesser Fish Eagle following the road above our heads. Fulvettas are also babblers, and the family, or families, are very well represented here – we also heard Short-tailed Babblers and Chestnut-backed Scimitar-babblers. Did I mention them?

They really appeared to enjoy this, because as soon as they swam back to the rocks they would line up again to repeat the experience. Green-and-rufous Kingfisher is the only Cholorceryle species I haven’t seen, so observing one would complete a genus in this fascinating family. It seemed like a really fun way to spend the day!

I haven’t done any surveys, but I would bet my binoculars that images and stories of hawks attract more attention and adoration from birders and the average person on the street than any other bird family. Families do not hike up mountains to sit all day on pointy rocks to watch woodpeckers. To me, the term “raptor” includes owls.

It was a heart-pounding scene straight out of Jurassic Park, an odd experience for a laid-back pursuit like birding.
